There was a contest in 1816, hosted at the Villa Diodati, which is very near where I was born. It was a three-day contest about who could produce the best horror/ghost story. Such authors as Mary Shelley and Lord Byron were there.
At this contest Mary Shelley first wrote the story that we now know as Frankenstein. Frankenstein is one of my favorite stories, which has inspired some of my work but it was this contest that has inspired this project -- the idea of a bunch of people meeting at a remote location in Switzerland, and horror ensuing.
